So, Is Sex better than Candy?

A 13-year-old daughter and her mother were lying comfortably beside each other as the mother read aloud from a book. At a pause in the story, the daughter asked her mother, “Mom, is sex better than candy?” While most mothers might be taken aback by such a question unrelated to the story, this mother, without any hesitation, responded, “Oh yes, dear, with your husband in an eternal marriage, sex is far better than candy.”
As an adult woman, this daughter related that her mother’s answer had significant impact in shaping her attitudes about marriage and sexuality.
Her mother conveyed at least three important attitudes in her answer:
A sexual relationship should occur in the proper context of marriage.
That in this proper context, sex brings joy.
It is okay to talk about sex with a parent.
A loving Heavenly Father reserved something divine, the physical union between husband and wife, for the heart of marriage. In the intimate, personal, and often vulnerable space of marriage, God drew bounds around sacred physical union as something to be experienced with each other as husband and wife.
Sex within marriage potentially teaches Heavenly Father’s deepest truths about oneness. In this sense, sex within marriage is sanctified and serves great spiritual and temporal purposes, but as with most divine opportunities, much depends on the attitudes, timing, and behaviors of the individuals involved.
